Hyaluronic acid is being hailed in the media today
as the key to the “fountain of youth.” While hyaluronic acid has long been used
in ophthalmic surgery, dentistry and wound healing after surgery, interest in
its ability to reverse the aging process peaked after the airing of ABC’s News
Program on a village in Japan. Yuzuri Hara is the name of this village and the
elderly people there look youthful and are active. Most of the people live well
over the age of 80. They attribute their longevity and flawless skin to the
vegetables that were grown in the hills of this village. Most of these
vegetables were roots that contained a lot of starch such as imoji, satsumaimo,
satoimo, and konyaku. All of these roots are supposed to contain high levels of
hyaluronic acid. Local doctors state that nutrients in these starches aid the
body’s natural creation of HA, thereby allowing the people of Yuzuri Hara to
fend off the aging process. Such higher concentrations of hyaluronic acid help
skin cells retain their moisture, keeping eyes bright and skin vibrant and
smooth.
These findings led a Japanese pharmaceutical company to develop the first
hyaluronic acid pills. The company’s rigorous testing showed that more than 50%
of the test subjects experienced better eyesight, smoother skin, and decreased
fatigue after taking hyaluronic acid oral supplements. And no known side effects
have resulted from taking the HA pills. With these findings, the entire cosmetic
industry has jumped onto the HA bandwagon proclaiming its anti-aging qualities.

One of the main characteristics of aging
is saggy wrinkled skin which occurs as the body naturally loses its
ability to retain moisture levels in the skin. The moisture level in
the skin is maintained by the production of hyaluronic acid. But as we
age, our body ability to produce hyaluronic acid diminishes resulting
in saggy wrinkled skin. In order to retain youthful looking skin, the
natural aging process has to be reversed by replacing the hyaluronic
acid that is being depleted from the body.
Nutritional supplement and beauty products such as Episilk ® contain
ultra-high concentrations of Hyaluronic acid in order to provide
intensive moisture for aged skin that suffers from dryness and
wrinkles. When applied to the skin, HA penetrates the skin surface and
replenishes the natural levels. Like the naturally occurring Hyaluronic acid in the body, Hyaluronic acid used in this form
moisturizes the skin from inside-out - from the dermis (deeper layers)
to the epidermis (outer layers), thus restoring the youthful-looking
skin.
Some known side effects of hyaluronic acid
injection therapy for aging skin include
• Swelling
• Infection
• Redness
• Tenderness
• Acne
• Lumps
• Tissue hardening
• Unknown risks when used in combination with collagen
These side effects are serious enough to reconsider using injection
therapy of hyaluronic acid as an anti-aging treatment for the skin.
But the most important aspect of this wonder drug is understanding
that the people of Yuzuri Hara are not using HA as supplements or
injection therapy. The secret to their longevity may very well lie in
their holistic life style incorporating unprocessed foods and physical
activity together with a balanced life style. |
