Hyaluronic acid is found in abundance in the human
body and animals and certain types of food.
•
Human Source
Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally in the body. It is found in the synovial
joint fluid, the vitreous humor of the eye, the cartilage, blood vessels,
extracellular matrix, skin and the umbilical cord.
•
Cartilage
High concentrations of HA are found in human
cartilage providing the body with strength and flexibility. Hyaluronic acid is a
key component of synovial fluid which transports nutrients into cartilage
throughout the body.
•
Extra-cellular Matrix
Hyaluronic acid also contributes to the flow of
nutrients and metabolic waste in the extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM is
composed of material produced by the cells and excreted to the extracellular
space with the tissues. All nutrients and metabolic waste are transported
through the ECM. Hyaluronic acid locks moisture into the ECM and provides
support to the ECM's structure.
•
Skin
Hyaluronic acid is found in abundance in the skin
and helps to keep it moist and supple. Hyaluronic acid is present in both the
dermis and the epidermis.
•
Food Sources
There is no conclusive or definitive research on the presence of high levels of
Hyaluronic acid in food sources. However, there are possibilities that the
presence of nutrients in certain root vegetables could boost HA levels.
